My Problem
I attempted to replace what appeared to be a bad Hitachi 5400 rpm spinning disc in my mid-2012 macbook pro 13". I purchased a new 1TB Crucial SSD for the system. Sadly, when I installed the drive and attempted to restore from a Time Machine backup, the drive would throw "read" errors and disappear from the bus. The ultimate problem was not the original spinning disk, but the actual SATA cable. I ordered a cable from iFixIt and had it overnighted.
My Fix
The repair required no more than 5 minutes. I removed the old cable being careful not to bend any pins on the main board. I installed the new cable being careful not to kink it and jeopardize the integrity of the links. On the first boot, magic! Everything is sound. The SSD is blazing fast compared to the spinning disk.
My Advice
Use a good set of jewelers screwdrivers to remove the hard drive brackets and the sata cable screws.
