My Problem

2009 27" iMac failed hard drive. (and to save my nephew's life because my sister was pretty sure the drive failed because he was banging on the keyboard...<grin>)

My Fix

The repair went pretty well. This is for sure a two person job. Several small cables that require a delicate touch while holding up a 27" LCD panel would be pretty risky without someone to help.

My Advice

I bought the drive from IFIXIT in the hope that it would be 100% compatible. Apple has integrated heat sensors that drive fans on many components. If you look at the repair there are quite a few warnings in the mix. No matter what we did after replacing the failed drive those fans ran at 100%. We had to download a app to control the fan speed. There are quite a few articles out there on how to fix, several of them being on the iFixIT website. The ones that seem to work include soldering sensors and coming up with a new way to locate that heat sensor as opposed to having it plugged into the drive itself. My BIL isn't really going to do that, so the app was our only real choice.
