The keyboard stopped working when water was spilled on it.
The repair shop wanted too much money so we just used an external keyboard. We finally found this an unacceptable solution.
We followed the iFixit instructions. The repair was almost flawless. The microphone connection to the I/O board broke when we tried to remove the wire. It is very fragile. Luckily, that is not a necessary feature for us. We didn't even test it, but it probably still works.
We put out white sheets of paper and numbered each step that removed screws or parts. We taped the parts to the paper with clear tape next to the step number. This was super useful for the tiny screws. We labeled screws when two different kinds were used in the same step.
We had to get a 000 phillips screw driver. We had 10 minutes to spare on New Years eve.

Spilled water on the keyboard and the right half of the keys stopped working. Asked around for someone to do the repair, but Apple said they would erase my data and charge me an arm and a leg. 3rd parties were also giving me 500 dollar estimates.
Very easy and not difficult at all. Excellent instructions and iFixit sent me all the tools I needed to do the job... except for the phillips head to remove the trackpad which I already had. Would have been frustrating if I didn't.
Take it slow, read all the instructions. Also have plenty of space to line up all the screws you take out. Keep very close attention to the screws, and store them in the configuration in which you took them out. Some screws are longer than others. Be patient.

a user spilled a latte into their keyboard and while it was pretty well contained in the keyboard, it was not useable as a portable device. She bought a new one so we fixed this one.
Overall it went well. It gave me an excuse to buy some new tools. I popped the whole hinge off the track pad ribbon connector and that took a LONG time to put back on, but it's back together and good as new.
