Screen goes black after lifting halfway.
I can lift the screen halfway up and it works fine. After that black. I've never tried to repair a computer in any way. Where can I even begin to learn how to repair this on my own?

You study (not just read) the guides and comments for the particular problem… in your case it sounds like loose clutches (Mac speak for hinges) have cut or nicked a cable or two (inverter - data display cable). The cables might be "fixable" with some silicone… or they may need rerouting and/or even replacement.
Just to ensure that it' not logic board or GPU/VGC related connect an external monitor… it should not lose its signal.
