Introduction

Use this guide to disassemble an Asus N551JX laptop to gain access to the internal hardware.

  1. Shut down the laptop
    • Shut down the laptop

    • Remove USB devices and SD-cards

    • Turn the laptop upside down and remove the battery by sliding the slide

  2. Remove all marked screws

  3. Slide the disk drive out of the case

    • Remove the WLAN module by disconnecting the antennas and unscrewing the marked screw

  8. Start opening the case by inserting a opening pick on corner of the headphone jack side Continue by sliding the opening pick to the right

    • Repeat for the other two sides from the corners, do not try to open the battery side yet

    • No problem when you hear a click-sound

    • Usage of a spudger may be needed. If so, use the flat end

  9. Insert opening picks and make sure all plastic clips are free

    • Turn the wole laptop 180 degrees

    • Do not try to remove the black plastic body in this step

  10. Open the keyboard side of the laptop while holding the aluminium body Move the aluminium body gently towards you

    • Disconnect the marked connector by pulling the plastic pull-strip strait up.

    • Opening the laptop in this position is mandatory

    • Stop when hearing cracking sounds and try to reposition the body slightly

  11. You now have gain access to the internal hardware of the laptop

    • Reassemble by following the step in reverse

    • During reassembling, keep track of the unplugged connector in step 6

    • During reassembling, be careful when closing the aluminum body. The plastic clips on the battery side are fragile.

Conclusion

To reassemble the device, use the guide in reversed order.

Thank you for this guide, I'd have struggled without it.

I had a bit of a dent where my power socket was, and it snapped the surround of the screw holding it in place, a replacement is £25 on eBay.

I figured instead of paying that I'd try using a glue gun to fill the void between the socket and the plastic wall behind it.

Also bizarrely my HDD was only held in by two screws, which is a bit strange as I don't think I've ever had this laptop repaired before.
