Background and Identification

A urine analyzer is a medical device that performs automatic urinalysis. The unit will “detect and quantify a number of analytes including bilirubin, protein, glucose and red blood cells.” (News Medical) Depending on the device, it may have urine strip readers and process several hundred strips per hour using a a type of reflectance photometer.

In a study published in 2016, comparing urine analyzers to manual urine methods, the conclusion was that urine analyzers can “rapidly analyze a large number of urine samples with high repeatability. However, especially in pathological cases, confirmation of urinalysis results by manual methods or dipstick testing is recommended because of the limitations of automated analysers,” (NIH).
