A rotary tool is a handheld tool with a variety of functions. It has a fast spinning motor tip that fits various attachments for different tasks. Rotary tools are usually used for grinding, sanding, honing and polishing a variety of materials. Their compact size and versatility make them an easy-to-use and lightweight alternative to more heavy-duty power tools.
There are many different kinds of rotary tools, each more fit for a certain task. Some can be pneumatically powered, meaning that they can be run with pressurized air, and others can be electronic. The pneumatic types are called “die grinders” and are mainly used for heavy-duty professional tasks. More conventionally, the term “rotary tool” refers to the electronic version that is lightweight and has more general uses.
Also, rotary tools either have cords or are cordless and powered by a rechargeable battery. The corded versions can reach higher speeds (35,000 rpm) than the cordless ones (15,000 rpm). To have long-lasting rotary tools, look for ones that are able to have their motor brush replaced once it is worn.
The success of a rotary tool depends on whether an appropriate bit is used for a particular task and material. According to the Home Depot, the following is a list of common tasks and the coordinating types of bits:
- Carving and engraving: high speed cutters, engraving cutters, carbide cutters, diamond wheel points, and sanding drums
- Routing: router bits, including straight router bits, keyhole router bits, corner router bits, and groove router bits
- Drilling: drill bits
- Polishing: polish points or cones, sharpening wheels, and sanding drums
