Background and Identification
The Alienware 13 R2 is a gaming laptop released in 2015 as an updated version of the original Alienware 13. Like its predecessor, it has a 13-inch screen powered by an Nvidia GeForce GTX 960M graphics card. The keyboard and case of the laptop are made from black plastic, but the back of the display features a lighter gray finish. The Alienware “alien logo” with green eyes is printed prominently at the top of this surface. The keyboard has full-sized arrow keys which stick down an extra row below the “alt” and “ctrl” keys.
Under the hood, the Alienware 13 R2 has upgradeable memory and storage. The cover over these components can be removed with a Phillips screwdriver and a tiny bit of prying. The memory inside can be upgraded to a maximum of 16 GB. Some models of the laptop come with a standard 2.5-inch hard drive which you can replace if it dies or upgrade it to a much faster SSD (this will do wonders for your performance). Other models instead use an extra circuit board (see it here on Amazon) in place of the hard drive. The board has two M.2 slots for SSDs. These two storage solutions cannot be installed at the same time (they both take up the same spot in the laptop), but you can switch between the two if you buy the adapter cable required (and the extra board if needed).
You can identify the Alienware 13 R2 by looking for a sticker on the bottom side containing the model name “Alienware 13 R2” or some variation thereof. If you can’t find the sticker there, Dell describes other methods for getting the model number on this support page.
