Is cost effective to buy your own SSD?

With new mid-2012 MacBook Pro's (non-Retina) would it be more cost effective to get SSD on the market rather than the one Apple offers.

Traditionally Apple has charged way to much for added RAM and hard drive upgrades. Street prices are much better. The only warning is on the flash drives, get as big a one as you can afford as it can't be upgraded.
