I have a 1991 Chevy g20 I got my transmission rebuilt and I was driving one day and heard a noise like the a band had pop then I wouldn’t shift again. This is the second time I took it back to the guy that rebuilt it for the same problem. What could it be cause he wouldn’t tell me and my van stays out there for 6 and 7 months at a time???

A 1984 700R4 transmission is hydraulically controlled through the valve body with only one solenoid to operate the lock-up torque converter.

Let's start with the basics - What was the circumstances that lead up to this point? Was the transmission shifting OK or has it been parked for a long period of time? Is the fluid level full and bright pink or is it dark or black? Does the fluid smell burnt?

I have an 1984 gmc jimmy with a 700r4 transmission. I was driving it down the road and out of nowhere the transmission went like it was in neutral but was in drive. I have no gears at all now and My fluid is full and is red like its suppose to be and it don't smell burnt. Can't figure out what caused this to happen. I'm a certified mechanic and have owned my own shop and have never seen or heard of this happening could really use some help on what could be the problem.

Dirty transmission fuel could cause the transmission’s gears or springs in the governor to delay shifts. You mentioned that the transmission fluid appears to be clean, so this may not be the problem. One of the common problems with this transmission is slipping between the 3rd and 4th gears. Overheating can weaken the transmission’s clutch pack disks, causing the ends to shear off and causing a serious problem. This gear slipping usually occurs between 3rd and 4th, but I would assume that it could happen with any of the clutch pack disks.

If it's an 700r4 check the tv cable coming out of driver side. Google or whatever how to set the cable, cause if it's not perfect you can and will burn tranny and ruin it in as low as two miles. It looks like kick down cable but it controls the fluid, pressure and everything else that's very important. Check into, it could save your tranny if not to late already. I personally don't like the cable set up at all. Thanks
