Why can't I use my Apple ID after upgrade and OS X install?

Hi all. I just upgraded my 2012 MacBook Pro. all is well but for the fact i cannot use Safari effectively and I can't log in to the App store with my Apple ID. I changed my password, and tried a couple of other things. The message i get when when I try to log in is 'connection failed". Any ideas? I'm running OS X Maverick 10.6.1.

If you've verified that your password is correct (logging on via another device is a good way to check), then my best guess is that this issue stems from MacOS Mavericks being too old to securely connect to Apples servers, so the log in function no longer works. Mavericks was released over 10 years ago so this could definitely be the case. A few things you can try:

  • Make sure that the date and time are correct on the laptop
  • Make sure you've installed the latest software updates for Mavericks (should be at version 10.9.5)
  • Check if the thing you're trying to download via the app store can be downloaded elsewhere, usually this is the case

If none of these work, you may want to consider upgrading the computer to the latest MacOS it can support, 10.15 Catalina, which may work with the App store.

Yes, I've done all those things and have the latest version of Mavericks. I was running Catalina before I updated the hard drive. I've tried to upgrade to Catalina, and that's problem, I can't get it on the App store as it wants my Apple ID, and that's the issue....Mavericks won't allow the log in. any other ideas?

@paulahanson I think you will need to upgrade 1st to El Capitan and then to High Sierra and then to Catalina, something to do with boot ROM versions needed for each upgrade ;)

thanks!!!!! That does make sense. would if make any differernce if I reinstalled OS X? I'm thinking not.

@paulahanson There are a few methods to do this but I think the 'safest' is to go the El C, HS, Catalina route. Unless you made a bootable installer for Catalina, and then 'correctly' wiped the drive & started fresh. But this is also a predicament I have with some old Macbooks that had no SSD's in them when I got them so I am not sure where to begin as we must avoid this 'Failed to load EFI driver issue' which I have a hunch can be triggered by 'upgrading to far ahead'.....

I'm very happy to say, that after I tried Sierra from the web, which was recommended, went straight to Catalina, and lo and behold, it worked. It took some time with updates etc, but things are humming along nicely. Thanks to everyone for their guidance! I'm the most un-techy person, but with patience and guidance from you all, I got it done, saved $$$ and have a second laptop that will be reliable! Thanks all!
