Installing system software in firewire mode

I have two Ibook g4's...one has the flashing question mark folder and the superdrive is non-responsive. Can I start both up and copy or transfer the working computers system folder to the other computer if I no longer have software install discs? Is there another way to install a bootable system w/o the discs? What is the earliest or latest version of mac os I can install on this computer? I may have an older software disc, and I have install discs for a macbook pro but it is an Intel running 10.6-ish and the Ibook is a PPC.

Thanks!!!

Use Target Mode. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661

Hook the two units up via a firewire cable. Start the good machine up then the other machine holding down the "T" key. This should bring up an icon the the bad machines hard drive on the screen of the good machine. You can now use Disk Utilities to repair or reformat the drive of the bad one. If you have to reformat, use the "write zeros" option to clear out any bad blocks. Give it one partition.

Next clone your existing hard drive. To do this download and install SuperDuper and run it (free). http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/S...
