PS2 Slim won't read any DVDs after reassembly

Hello everyone, I have a PS2 Slim SCPH-90004 that just won't read any DVDs after cleaning. I tried many other DVDs and issue is exactly the same everytime. I have another PS2 Slim that I also cleaned and it just works fine. what could be the issue here?

Hi @pandemic, did you manage to get your console fixed?

I've got the exact same problem, I disassembled the entire console, replaced the thermal pads, cleaned everything with isopropyl alcohol, and now the console refuses to read any type of disc, even though it worked without issue beforehand.

I suggest trying the potentiometer adjustment method as per this video: https://youtu.be/0tvwdel1XuA?si=ygaaOvC5... - I made little progress, and after a few attempts the drive did read one disc for a moment, however not enough to ascertain full functionality. Might help, might not.

If all else fails, I will replace the laser as demonstrated by @dan0, I've only got one question: which type of laser fits the SPCH-90004 models? I've got conflicting results in my research, because some websites cite the TDP-182W model as the one fitting our iteration of consoles.

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions!

Hi!

Usually it's the PVR-802W. But you also got the SPU-3170. Please check them both on Google and check which one you have right now, so that you will have the correct model you need.

Hopefully you can see the picture this way: https://www.google.com/search?sca_esv=fb...

@el_gato1 yes I did, quite a long time ago. I ended up replacing the whole DVD assembly, worked like a charm then

Update: I've replaced the laser today and, well... it's still not working. The nature of the problem is different though: before the replacement the console spun the disc for a moment and either displayed the "The disc could not be read." error or the "Reading disc..." prompt simply dissapeared.

Now the mechanism itself is fully functional, as in the laser moves freely and the disc spins with no issue, but the console still won't read any data. The only difference software-side is that the drive tries to read the disc for approx. 1 or 2 minutes and only then the OS throws out the error. My suspicions lie with the laser ribbon cable - am I correct, or have you got other suggestions?

Hi!

Thanks for the update! In this case, I have some bad news... I don't think it's the laser ribbon cable, but it could be it. First I would follow this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pthhet1_...

As you can see, there are way more components on there that can cause the PS2 Slim from reading games :(.

Please check those components as well and see if you can find the issue there... Sorry.

Hi there!

Usually it’s the laser which is done. I had many PS2 Slim repaired with this.

Here is my guide: PlayStation 2 Slimline PVR-802W Laser Replacement

It’s possible that a different type of laser is installed, if this is the case, please refer to my other guide: PlayStation 2 Slimline SPU-3170 Laser Replacement

The process is nearly the same for both lasers and all PS2 Slim models.

Part:

Please check if the laser model fits the part above.

Please try this first and see if it works! If you have any question, please let me know!

Well, as the saying goes, If it ain't broke, don't fix it. There is no telling what on can do during disassembly/reassembly that would render a unit nonoperational. Since DVD lasers are very sensitive to alignment, it may be misaligned. Changing the LED drive may compensate a little for misalignment, but at the cost of Laser life. Improperly connected devices, broken pieces, etc. etc.
