nvidia GPU chip discolored

A1260

Have a macbook pro showing typical signs of no video upon inspecting the GPU the copper block on the top of the chip shows a light sort of shade on the left side ,kinda discolored not that bad though. Would a proper reflow help or does this GPU need to be completely replaced.

Why don't you just get a free logic board replacement from Apple? Here's a question on the Nvidia GPU from a couple of days ago. Overheated MBP now hangs at boot...

I buy boards for this exact reason BGA reworking is a hobby for me. Thanks for all the input.

No. This GPU is dead. You need to replace it.

Here's the guide to remove the motherboard so you can replace the video card. You can use lead or lead free solder. The solder will not affect how well the chip stays after replacement. Should you replace the GPU apply the thermal place correctly. I have seen the service manual archives from this era and it's disgusting. Apple pulled a DMCA though :-(.

You can find Artic Silver 5 and Cooler Master High Performance thermal paste here. Please do not use the Apple thermal paste again. That stuff is garbage.

Just in case, read this on how to apply thermal paste if you need to. I'm providing it just in case.

The old chips can work just as good if you use leaded solder the new chips use lead free solder which is main reason why the joint cracks. I can reball chip myself but I was'nt shure if it was totally shot.

it's worth a try if you want, no guarantees it will work

by

if you can reball it yourself, do it, get good thermal paste and put it on properly and you can fix it

thanks I just needed to know about the color I'm positive replacing the gpu will work I've done it before I just wanted some input on the discoloration.

it's slim to none discolored GPU's work long, or they are dead for good, or they don't last long, it's ultimately better to get a 2010 version to be safe, 2007 ones are cheap, but the chip material is bad too, i have no idea how to reball, but i know a bit about the recall issue for these pretty well
