How to securely fix back the casing of the top case?

The outer side of the top case has fallen off this MacBook A1278. What is the best way to fix this back securely? I have tried with some double sided tape but it isn't doing it properly and is not exactly feeling like a long term fix. I guess there is some kind of specific compound needed to stick aluminum to aluminum?

You'll need to do a bit more disassembly and then clean the parts fully as the old epoxy has failed. Follow this guide to complete the LCD panel removal MacBook Pro 15" Unibody 2.53 GHz Mid 2009 LCD Replacement once the panel is removed you can then clean the now freed frame and outer cover using some solvent and scraping whats left off. The surface doesn't have enough surface for the fresh epoxy to adhere too to well. I use sandpaper to roughen up the surface where the frame attaches to the LCD frame its self.

I use a semi-flexible epoxy marking off the points of contact, cleaning and wetting both surfaces with the epoxy and then putting a small amount of weight on top (you don't want to squeeze out the epoxy between the surfaces, just enough so the surfaces are square to each other.

The other option is just replacing the full display assembly if the display still has issues.

@danj EPOXY that's it yes! I always forget about this when I have my computer head on.... nice one, yes I have to now remove the glass to do a proper job on it.... I think before I did put a new glass on this and the heat gun probably made the old epoxy weak.... risk another broken glass or just do a rough patch up.... toss a coin here.

@livfe I’ve done quite a view, haven’t had that hard a time, about an hour’s worth of time. Once done it holds up.

@danj I got the same brown epoxy from Mr. DiY try it later

@livfe - Why do you want to use the stuff that failed? I use the silicon version which won’t breakdown.

by

@danj It failed after 12 years since the unit was new.... I think the epoxy I got will be good enough for at least the remaining lifespan of this 2012. Not sure if they had the silicon version available in the store here I just got the best thing they had...."Pioneer contact bond all purpose contact cement.
