This is tricky! Is the port assembly bad or the charging logic within the logic board need repairs?

The easiest to check is to replace the port assembly. You’ll need to review the schematics and board view drawings to figure things out.

This as well. Get your model info and specs first in case it does come to drastic measures like this. Do note that Apple isn't known for being very repair-friendly, so be careful what to do, and ensure you know what you're getting yourself into first.

@arandomhitman - Can you elaborate what your point is here. I only fix Mac systems and I don’t have issues replacing simple port assemblies like this and if the logic board needs repair that too is mostly fixable with the skills and tools.

While Apple is not known for deep repairs like fixing logic boards as well as being over focused only dealing with assembly’s there are many techs which have the skills to dig deep into the logic board if need be.

The whole point of I Fix It is to break the stranglehold of hardware makers creating unfixable hardware and make parts more accessible for ALL!

@danj im not even against it lol. I get the point of Ifixit, but I was offering an easier solution. Glad yours worked out over mine though.

Hi Mathieu,

Have you tried resetting your SMC (System Management Controller)?

If not, I'd advise you to do so.

You can find info on how to do so here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/102605

oh, and I'd consider restarting if you haven't done so already. If both don't work, I'd advise you to use a voltmeter to check if your port is working properly. If that doesn't work either, you'd need to check the power delivery modules on the laptop's logic board and potentially replace the port.

@arandomhitman Firstly wow thankyou for responding so quickly. We have tried Resetting SMC through your provided link unfortunately no success.

We also can't restart it because the battery is completely drained.

As you suggested next is to use a volt meter. Would the volt meter still work even though it has no battery?

"you'd need to check the power delivery modules on the laptop's logic board and potentially replace the port." Is this step also done using a volt meter? would you by any chance have a guide on how to check if those are working properly?

@mathieuverh2954 No problem. In that case, I'm sadly out of ideas on what to do there other than swapping in a replacement battery or injecting voltage into the power delivery modules via a multimeter. If you can't do so yourself or neither work, just get it serviced by Apple. They're not great with pricing, but they know their products the best.

Alright thank you very much for your quick responses.
