I need to upgrade the SSD on a MacBook Pro 2015

Hi,

I have a Macbook Pro Early 2015 that only has 128GB of storage.

After reading a bit about this, as usual, Apple likes to keep things complicated.

There are, now, many Chinese brands selling SSDs for these models. However, I don't know anything about their reliability.

My options:

1 - Used SSD pulled from another Macbook Pro (I am a bit scared of this)

2 - Chinese new one like, for example, the Faxiang SSD (Fanxiang 2TB 1TB PCIe NVMe TLC SSD For 2013 2014 2015 2017 MacBook Air Pro A1502)

4 - Transcend 480GB JetDrive 820 PCIe Gen3

5 - OWC Aura Pro X2

Please help me with this.

Kind regards,

Pedro

You could use the SSD from the other Macbook Pro as that might be your best decision. However, as you do not specify which model that other Macbook is, there may be compatibility issues, but that shouldn't be too much of an issue as you can simply check if they use the same connector. The OS might also need to be wiped and replaced as the OS loaded onto that other Macbook SSD might not work with your 2015 Macbook Pro, but that shouldn't be too difficult to do as you really just need to enter recovery mode on the Macbook in order to re-install the OS.

If you are unable to use the SSD for some reason, either due to compatibility issues or it just not working, then I would recommend getting that Transcend or OWC SSD as it should be much more reliable compared to the 3rd party Chinese SSD.

So i'd try doing option 1, but if it isn't possible try doing option 4 or 5.

Thank you for the reply. The SSD on option 1 would be bought on eBay taken from a MacBook Pro 2015. My only concern is for how long a 9 year old SSD will work.

Depends on it's usage, judging by how the SSD is around 9 years old, I would probably suggest just going for option 4 or 5 considering how they will last much longer.

I read a comment from someone on the internet stating that using SSDs different from the ones that come with the computer, the system will slow them down by 50% or more. Is this true?

The post I was mentioning is this one by Jerryk.

@pcardoso73 I don't believe so. It might be that the included Macbook Pro SSD may be slightly faster than some 3rd party SSDs, but as long as you use a high quality SSD your performance will not slow down.
