Battery Service Recommended confusion

Hi all,

My MacBook Pro 13" 2017 has been having battery issues for a while - a few months ago the battery used to lose charge very quickly, but that stopped for a while and I believed all was well. Sadly, this week it has been barely charging - charging on and off at 30 second intervals. The cables I have been using work fine

There has been a 'service recommended' sign in the battery tab for some time, but I am poor so I have been avoiding this.

Today I looked into things a bit more. The cycle count is 676, I checked on the apple website and I think the max cycle count it is supposed to get to before needing service/replacement is 1000

I have just reset the SMC, and this has helped - it is now charging properly and has gone from 12% to 25% in the past 10 minutes which is the first time this has happened in days. Also, the "time until fully charged" changed from over 5 hours to just over 2 hours

Sadly, the 'service recommended' sign is still there. Just wondering if it is foolish of me to continue ignoring this if the cycle count is low / it is now charging normally; or if anyone else has encountered this and has a fix that doesn't involve paying £245 for a new battery at the apple store.

Thanks in advance for any advice :)

Assuming it still lasts long enough for you, you can keep using the old battery until it doesn't.

The guideline from Apple about the battery lasting at least 1,000 cycles is a rough estimate. From my experience, batteries can last as little as 500 cycles and as many as 1,500.

If you're willing to repair it yourself, the battery from iFixit is only $110 for the part, or $120 if you don't have tools and need some. Here's the guide for replacing the battery.
