Cannot Update from 10.5.4 to 10.5.8

I have Leopard 10.5.4 on my 80GB hard drive. I am trying to upgrade to 10.5.8 in order to install iWorks. I first tried the Automatic Updates, down loaded 768MB which would hang soon after trying to install. This method failed several times. Then tried downloading the update from mac-free.com which also failed. Then tried copying OSX 10.5.8 from my 17" Aluminum, but that was convoluted and failed as well. Next I went to Apple Downloads and downloaded the upgrade (274MB, not the original 768MB) which also failed.

But this time I got a clue, it says "This volume does not meet the requirements for this update"

I am puzzled by that since it is good enough for 10.5.4.

Help, anyone?

You need the Combo update (745mb), the regular update (274mb) is only for 10.5.7. Try going in two steps in stead of one.

One of your RAM chips is bad or 1 of your slots is bad. Remove 1 RAM chip from the bottom and leave the 1 Gig on top in place. Now give it a try. Next remove the RAM chip on top and put it in the bottom slot. Now give it a try.

Next take the RAM chip out and set it aside. Now grab the other RAM chip and do the same instructions as above. Still nothing? Go get some RAM chips you know that work and do the above again. Also, try doing the install with charger plugged in and without the charger.

Also, couldn't hurt to do a SMC reset, repair disc permissions, and repair disk before you try the install.
