Generally sounds heard when braking are related to worn out brake pads. If you're hearing noises, you'll need to take off the front wheels and manually inspect the brake pads for wear. As the friction material wears out, gradually it will allow the metal backing plate to come in contact with the metal brake rotor. That's bad - it will ruin your brake rotor if you allow it to go on for too long, so check them as soon as you can.

There are some manufacturers who incorporate a wear indicator into their brake pads; it's a piece of metal that's designed to come in contact with the rotor when the brakes have worn down past a certain point and let you know that the brakes need attention. So the noise you hear could be very worn pads or it could be the early warning system telling you it's time to change them.

Check the thickness of the pads and let us know what you find. Take pictures and add them to your question if you're not sure.
