Internal keyboard and trackpad freezing up after a few minutes

Hi,

5 months ago I spilled liquid on my macbook. I took it to a repair shop and they cleaned it out and got it working again.

A couple weeks ago I was moving a ton of pictures over to my computer and I left it for a bit to do it’s thing. When I came back it was super hot and loud fan sound. I turned it off.

Since then my trackpad and keyboard will stop working after a few minutes of it being on. After they stop working if I let the computer sit for 20 minutes or so and turn it back on they will work for a few minutes and the freeze up again.

Today I tried a test where I turned it on and did some things and after some minutes it froze. I let it sit for 20 minutes and then turned it back on and did nothing, just left the screen on and after a few minutes it froze.

External mouse and keyboard still works. I’ve read a ton of posts on replacing the cable or the power supply but none of these posts had a liquid spill.

I’m hoping maybe I can just replace one of those and it would be good but wanted to check with you all. I really like this computer and would love to try to save it. Thanks!!

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

I’m suspecting your battery dying! Given your systems age it likely needs a fresh battery. When they fail they tend to swell up pressing onto the uppercase pressing from below against the keyboard and trackpad cables. It can also cause the system to overheat as well.

@danj I replaced the battery. Seemed to be working longer than it used to, but then it froze again. But after a bit it started working. It did that a few more times before it froze for good. The battery does not feel hot. Do you think I should go ahead and try for the track pad cable replacement or do you think it’s a much bigger issue? And according to the stats this battery is running way cooler than my other one. Thanks!!!

@angela8081 - When you took out the logic board did you see signs of the liquid spill?

While the cable might need replacing, in this series it’s not the first thing I would do. Instead I would try to diagnose things a bit more.

I would see if the onboard diagnostics finds something as well as install this great app TG Pro it will allow you to see more clearly the systems temps. Here we want to monitor the CPUs temp and how effective the cooling system is working. The issue I’m suspecting is the heat sink cooling liquid has leaked out. Apple had a run of bad heat sinks the tubing would get pin holes.

@danj Thanks for all the help. I did buy TG Pro and have it going. I'm not really sure what I should be looking out for, in general everything seems to be in the green. It does say that there are peeks that get to like 91C. It definitely does feel less hot with the new battery and I'm able to use it a little longer than I used to, but in the end it does still freeze. I was going to show you a screenshot, but looks like I can't attach anything here. If you know what I should maybe look at in TG Pro that would help. Let me know and I'll check that out and report back :) Thanks so much,

Angela

@angela8081 - It can be a bit confusing posting images. Add you need to do is create an answer, then look at the tool bar for the mountain symbol near the right end, click on it to open the image toolbox, add the image into it then click on it again to enter it into the answer. When you do you’ll see the image code added to the answer, but wait! I don’t want an Answer, I want to post this within my question! No problem! When you safe your posting it will ask you if you want to update your Post, click it and you’ll see it added, don’t forget to safe it. Done!
