MacBook Pro 2012 13" Does not turn on. Please Help!

Good Afternoon,

I have just taken out my MacBook Pro 2012 13" Unibody 2.5GHz i5 that has been sitting switched off for about a month now, and it will not turn on.

I have tried all the key combinations, hitting corners, pressing on keyboard, removing battery, etc. but it still will not turn on. Not sure if the logic board may have given up???

It does still charge and I have tried putting a different battery in as I have a number of these MacBook Pros, also the battery indicator lights do light up.

Can someone please help me?

Also, I have tried changing ram and ssd, the ssd and ram are both working in my other computers.

Thanks Dan,

I actually bought this computer about 2 months ago as I buy and sell them. Do not know about its history but does not look like any water damage. This one had a problem where it was booting to a file with a question mark in it. It just needed the ssd to be wiped and reinstalled. Since then it has sat switched off as I was waiting to sell it/had it for sale. As I said before, I have tried another battery, ssd/hdd, and ram in it and it still won't boot.

@mangoelectrics - This logic board looks like it’s brand new! This system was barely used if at all!

Options

Dead logic boards can be for many different reasons. I would take the logic board fully out and inspect it looking for corrosion or burnt components.

If you can’t see anything then you may to think about what is the best way to get going here. Frankly, I would look for a replacement logic board as being the easiest. Otherwise, you’ll need to find someone with the deeper skills in fixing your logic board.

Thank you very much Dan. I did remove the logic board yesterday, but I really should have taken some photos! Would it be possible if I were to send you the photos could you look over them and see what you think?

Also, some people have had their keyboard stop working, is this possibly more likely?

@mangoelectrics - Just post the photos here so others can see.

As far as keyboard’s this series has an independent power button so a liquid spill or spraying a cleaner directly on the case can find it’s way in effecting it alone.

You didn’t offer that in your post was that what happened? It could have been a white ago, corrosion can take time to do it’s damage.

Other series can encounter issues with in the trackpad that effect the keyboard and even batteries can effect things, mostly when they blister pressing against the keyboard.

Amazingly managed to start it on Saturday, by leaving it for two days with the battery connector unplugged. Then with it still unplugged holding down the power button for about 5 seconds and then immediately holding it down again for about 5 seconds then immediately hold it down for about 1 min and then immediately hold down for about another 30 seconds. Then immediately pug in the connector and hold the power button for 8 seconds and then press it again for about 4 seconds/until it starts and it always starts up.

@danj Once I have it started what should I do?

I have started it in Apple Diagnostics and no issues were found.

Can anyone suggest something, should I just leave it running for a while?

It will Restart with no problems but if I Shut it Down it will not start again and I have to do the above procedure.

@mangoelectrics - Let’s get a snapshot of CoconutBattery so we can see what’s happing with the charging logic.

Apple diagnostics only goes so far… it can’t dig past the digital space. So all it can tell you if a given SMC sensor has failed or not offering the expected value.
