My right joystick wont read horizontal inputs.

The right analog stick on my Xbox controller will not read horizontal inputs but at the same time, when I go into the controller settings and enter the button testing it reads as if the right stick is at full lock to the left. What is causing this and is there any way to fix it without the access to basic tools, like screwdrivers

There are a number of things that could be the culprit, but you can't even assess the situation without opening the controller.
