Cracked MacBook Pro text plate

Hiya!

I've just opened my MacBook for the first time today and the bit that says 'MacBook Pro' has a crack in it. Is this something that can be fixed or is there anything out there like a protector for it so it doesn't get any worse?

Thanks!

This is the chin plate and often breaks when something is wedged between the case and lid.

For now leave the lid up! As you can create a much more expensive repair as the glass shards can cut or damage the displays ribbon cables underneath.

Extreme care is needed carefully removing the plate and replacing it. You may want to visit an Apple Store if you don’t have the skills. The plate can be found here Chin plate bezel

It’s not a super difficult repair as far as the logistics, but it requires a lot of patience and “finesse.” There’s a whole minefield of cables under there that could make it much more costly if they are damaged. But it’s definitely less expensive than a whole display assembly. Which is what Apple will do.

@flannelist - I’ve sent a few folks here in Boston to the local Apple Store and they did replace it. There’s where a single crack, not shattered. But different Apple Stores might push the display.

Even still a good independent can do it too.
