transfering applications from 1 unit to another

Can i take a hd with system software on it copy it onto another hd with higher gb, put it into another computer of same family (iBook to iBook) and use it as system start up

Sure you can! Just clone the original drive with a application like "Super Duper", into an external drive or via Target Mode using firewire.

I second the recommendation to use SuperDuper. just to clarify, you MUST use disk cloning software like this to clone your entire drive - you can't simply mount the drive and manually drag-to-copy the folders from your existing drive to the new drive as that won't give you a bootable drive. of course your original drive must have had a bootable OS on it to start with.
