Hewlett-Packard began manufacturing personal laptop computers in 1993.

My optical drive not recognized

My optical drive is integral HP HDX Notebook laptop running on Windows 7 Vista, has developed the same problem of OP. Type: BD-ROM/DVD/CD Rewritable Drive. Mfr: HP. I tried all troubleshooting solutions by HP support but in vain. HP has stopped support for Windows 7. I even connected the internal drive as external but same problem is repeated. Any suggestions?

Update (02/20/2023)

My laptop model is HP HDX X16T-1200 CTO Premium Notebook PC. It has got an integral optical disc drive Type BD-ROM/DVD CD Rewritable Drive. Mfr.: HP. OS Windows 7 Vista.

Whenever I try to play a CD or DVD by selecting and opening the BD ROM (in my case E drive) icon , the cd/dvd is ejected, with a pop up message 'Insert the Cd'.It seems it is not able to detect the cd and thinking the tray is empty. CD and DVDs are in good condition. I had tried all the trouble shooting steps as suggested by HP support. The cd/dvd drive is showing up in BIOS boot order list as 'Internal CD/DVD ROM Drive' I had checked Device Manager and drivers and all the procedures as suggested by HP. The HP laptop had come with Windows Media Player. The music library is having previously uploaded songs, when the disc drive was working normally and I am able to listen to those songs.

While trouble shooting for hardware failures, I came across a message "Windows did not detect a DVD playback device in your computer", when there is one very much! What does it mean?I am totally confused.

Suspecting some loss of communication between laptop motherboard and optical drive, I removed the integral optical disc drive and connected it as an external drive by means of a SATA cum Power cable to the USB port of the laptop. When I tried to play the CD, alas, the same event is repeated. Please note before connecting the drive, I had cleaned the lens. Now, with Microsoft Windows and HP have stopped supporting Windows 7 Vista, I am stuck with this problem. Can anyone throw some light on this issue?

Thanks.

After inserting the disc, can you hear if it spins or is it ejected straightaway?

Try inserting a disc and remember the orientation of the label and see if the label has moved (rotated) from the position it was when it was inserted to when the disc has been ejected.

If it hasn't moved then the drive motor may not be operating, if it has moved then the laser lens may be dirty and not reading the disc.

Thanks for your suggestion.

On closing the empty tray or on closing the tray with CD/DVD disc, I could hear the whirring sound for 45 secs, with an intermittent gap of 1sec for the 45 sec duration. After that once I clicked the E drive, the tray is ejected with the disc, with a message "Insert the disc"Even if the tray is empty the tray is ejected. I had cleaned the lens (2 nos.) but same thing happens.

Sounds like a faulty switch contact inside the player.

What is the "product number" of the laptop as printed on the info label on the bottom of the laptop?

Is it showing in Device Manager at all?

If not, since you've tried connecting it via USB (as well as the original sata connection) and it still doesn't work then the interface control board in the player is most probably faulty.

The hard part would be finding a replacement. Finding what's wrong with the player's interface board would be just as difficult as there's no schematics available, or at least I couldn't find any

Here's a link to the parts for the model.

Scroll down to "Drives" to find the part numbers for all the DVD drives compatible with the model.

If you search online using the part number only, you may find a supplier that has one but the ones that I found aren't that cheap i.e. ~$US100+ but you may have better luck.

Yes, it is showing up in Device Manager. Under DVD/CD-ROM drives it is shown as Optiarc BD ROM BC-5500S SCSI CD ROM Device. When I right clicked in properties in General tag it says 'This device is working properly'! When I clicked the update the driver for this device it says 'Windows has determined the driver software for your device is up to date!' Well, I do not know what to make of it. Since I have not updated my OS, which is currently Windows 7 Vista (Ultimate), I am not able to understand why I should go for an Advanced Driver Updater.

From the foregoing, do you still think the replacement of interface control board is necessary?
