Strange issue:battery OK, power supply OK - will not charge

Hello guys,

I just got hands on a MacBook Pro 15" TouchBar (A1990 / EMC3215) and it did not want to turn on.

Already done:

  • Battery removed, installed a new one
  • checked the power button, working perfect
  • SMC reset

--> MBP is starting up and running "normally". Start, Reboot, Shutdown working correct.

Next problem:

  • Battery will not load, power supply via USB-C is not detected by the MBP
  • the 2 USB-C ports on the left are working with USB-C devices (charging iPhone but not detecting iPhone in Finder, UBS-C stick is recognized and works fine
  • the 2 USB-C ports on the right are completely dead, not charging any devices and not recognizing any devices

--> MBP will run as long as the load of the battery will last. Any tipps what to check, do, tinker?

You sound like you have a few logic board issues. Did this system get wet?

The right side ports assembly could be bad try swapping the assembly or just get a new one MacBook Pro (A1989, A1990, A2141, A2159, A2251, A2289, A2338 Mid 2018-2022) USB-C Board

I’m a bit confused by loading, is the system booting up, just not able to be logged into? If that’s the case this system is likely TouchID and/or iCloud locked. You will need to contact the original owner to get then to remove the system from their iCloud account and they will need to unlock the system physically (their fingerprint is needed) once that happens they or you can remove the TouchID fingerprint and they should remove any personal info before handing the system back to you.

Good morning and thank you Dan for your help :-)

There has been no water damage as far as I know. All the water detectors are still white and I can see no water stains or corrosion.

I will try to swap the USB-C boards to check if it is the board itself. Thanks again for sharing the link for spares.

I am confused too - the system is booting up, power button is working, ToucID is working. I can log into the account and everything (what I checked so far ...) is working fine. Except that the power supply (checked the power supply for errors as well and tried another fine one too) is not recognized and the battery is not charging.

I found a video from Louis Rossmann fixing a similar error. For his MBP it worked to just reflow a chip on the left side of the board. But I will go on with USB-C boards first of course.

(Link to the Rossmann-Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-K3IhB-x...)

Will keep you posted...

@benz78 - Let’s get a snapshot of CoconutBattery main screen so we can get a better idea. You should be able to launch it from a USB drive.

Hello @danj

I should have done that immediately when it worked back then ... :-(

Already installed Coconut battery and nothing strange there .. except for the "Power adapter - battery" message. Never the info that it is "charging".

The battery drained over the last 2 days and now I am unable to charge or start.

I checked the USB-C-slots with a voltage tester/multimeter. All 4 ports showed 5V and max. 0.4 amps. Far away from 20V and 2amps+ for the charging voltage.

Tomorrow the new USB-C board will be delivered and I will change them and keep on checking.

@benz78 - Sounds like the TPS51980A power controller has failed this takes the power feeds from the Texas Instruments CD3215C00Z (port power controllers) to power the logic board. Review MacBook Pro 15" Touch Bar 2019 Teardown Steps 3 & 4 which is the same layout of your 2018 system.

Sorry guys for letting you wait so long.

I deceided that this fix is beyond my skills and called it a loss :-(

Will use it as spareparts-donor for coming devices.
