Face-id not working, non-original screen, no visible damage

Hello, I recently got an iPhone 12 pro max off eBay with a horrible quality aftermarket display. This meant iOS 16 wasn't working so the seller sold it to me as broken. I reverted it back to iOS 15.6 to get the screen working again but now the face-id says it's unavailable.

The seller swears it was working for him on iOS 15. The ambient light sensor works, 3utools says the front camera is original and I can see the ir light when trying to take a portrait selfie. However this also does not detect my face (keeps saying move further away). I am not sure if the ear piece was replaced but this seems unlikely since you buy a display without it normally? Could it still show the ir light even with a replaced ear-piece? Any way to fix face-id? I tried resetting restoring and everything. Face-id was also not working on iOS 16.3 (used voiceover to confirm that).

I've found out by now that it's the dot projector not working, but both it's flex cable and the projector itself look virtually perfect

Never believe sellers, all they want is to sell the item. It probably wasn't working when the seller had it.

I rarely trust sellers on eBay when it comes to stuff like this, especially if it came with a cheap aftermarket display. If the ambient light sensor is damaged which is attached to the ear speaker, you could order an OEM display from Apple's self service repair store. It'll come as a whole new assembly with ear speaker and ambient light sensor and such. You'll need to run their diagnostic software and contact apple to program the new components will get rid of the display message. Just make sure you use the device's serial or IMEI number when ordering. Otherwise they won't let your program the new components. If the infrared camera or other components are damaged you're pretty much out of luck.

Before ordering anything I would check 3U tools. There's a tool under toolbox that'll test FaceID.
