Battery change now track pad and keyboard not recognised or function

Battery change on MacBook retinal 2017 now track pad and keyboard not recognised.

Just black screen saying pair a mouse so I paired my iMac wireless mouse then the screen changed to pair your keyboard. I tried pairing the Mac wireless keyboard that would not pair and so now I am stuck?

I intend to take it to bits again and refit the cables. Is there any other advice?

Well first thing I'd try myself was to in fact reseat the cables. Considering the keyboard is daisy-chained to the trackpad and then the trackpad connects to the rest of the logic board, I'd check the trackpad-board cable first.
