A SATA controller is a part of the logic board (in this case) which is capable of handling communications from a connected SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment) device. Basically it's the part of your board that handles storage functions.

The III just means it's the third version.

I can't be certain of the generation, but more than likely this already exists on your iMac. It definitely has a SATA controller since that's what your existing hard drive is using. Typically it will work even on earlier revisions of the SATA standard, just at slower speeds. Although I have known others that have used Crucial SSDs in these without issue. You can also use Crucial's tool to make sure it's compatible, but I doubt you'll have a problem.

Said Hejazi I would think the easiest way would be to get one of the kits from here. iMac Intel 27" EMC 2639 Kits That way you know it fits, has excellent service support and will be of high quality.
