Kenmore is a popular appliance brand commonly sold by Sears, but Sears does not manufacture any of the appliances themselves. Instead, they source that out and have other manufacturers make their appliances for them. Kenmore refrigerators are made by a variety of different manufacturers including LG, Electrolux, GE, and Whirlpool.

Hi @lisad11

The refrigerator doesn't have a separate defrost timer. The defrost function is initiated and controlled by the control board.

What is the problem with the refrigerator?

If it is a defrost problem e.g. refrigerator warm, freezer OK due to ice build up on evaporator fan or water leaking into the freezer compartment then it could be a faulty defrost heater, bi-metal defrost thermostat, blocked drain from under the evap unit to the evap pan under the compartments or worst case a faulty control board.

Here's some information that may help you:

Hi @warrenbritt ,

Do you wish to manually activate the defrost cycle in the refrigerator or perhaps test if the defrost timer is OK?

If so, your defrost timer can't be manually forced to start a defrost cycle in the way you describe, it doesn't work that way as it is not an adaptive type defrost timer but a continuous or a cumulative type¹ timer, (depends on how it is wired in the refrigerator). The one shown in the link is the one for your model refrigerator.

If you suspect that the timer is faulty, here's a video that shows how to manually test both types of defrost timers i.e. adaptive and continuous (or cumulative) that may help. The first link above also has a video that shows how to replace the timer.

If it is faulty, search online for W10822278 to find suppliers that suit you best.

¹ Here's a link that explains how timers work that may help. Scroll down to Typical Defrost Circuits. Your timer is an 8 hour timer (as shown on the timer itself i.e. defrost cycle occurs either every 8 hours or 8 hours compressor run time). However it doesn't show what the actual defrost time is. Usually it's around 20-25 minutes

I don't think it has a timer, it does it by temperature

Defrost Thermostat

The defrost thermostat monitors the temperature of the evaporator coils. When the coils drop below a set temperature, the thermostat contacts close to allow power to flow to the defrost heater during the defrost cycle. In the defrost cycle, the defrost heater melts away any frost that may have accumulated on the evaporator coils. If the defrost thermostat is defective, the thermostat contacts will not close. As a result, the thermostat won’t provide power to the defrost heater. To determine if the defrost thermostat is defective, use a multimeter to test it for continuity. If the defrost thermostat does not have continuity when it reaches the low temperature of its operating range, replace it.
