Does this sound like a battery issue? Not that clear to me

Hey community, need your help in confirming the cause of an issue I have

So one day my laptop was at around 70% change and that day whenever I plug it in to charging, it did not charge at all (it said on the MacBook ‘battery not charging’) it stayed this way. HOWEVER, the charger is detected and it powers the MacBook normally it just doesn’t charge the battery. So the result is a MacBook powered with charger but battery not charging and the yellow light on the magnetic part of the charger is NOT lit .

  • the charger looks in good condition.
  • Tried spare charger and same thing happens so charger isn’t an issue
  • Cycles are around 350 give or take.
  • System says battery is in good condition (although I doubt it because lithium batteries don’t last that many years. Also the percentage used to change quite frequently in ups and downs but few percentages only like go from 10 and i put it on sleep then when I open it minutes to hours later it’s 18 or 15. Or from 20 to 12 or 80 to 73 or 50 to 63…..Like that)
  • The charging plug looks OK. No burn marks or damage marks, same with charger
  • When the battery ran out, it doesn’t turn on anymore EVEN when plugged. It shows the red empty battery icon with electricity icon under it. So basically I cannot turn on the laptop now. But the MacBook detects that there is power input anyway because when I take if off the charger the icon changes to the normal low battery warning icon which is slightly different than the described above but similar

I excluded the charger being the issue.

But not sure if it is battery or something else at This point. I’m thinking it’s battery because has been 5 years since I bought it but the cycles and the condition is told to be normal from the system so it confuses me. Also I thought I should be able to use the MacBook normally with dead battery if plugged in but that’s not the case here I cannot turn it on anymore

Any suggestion ?

Hi Rami,

Have you done any OS update (major or minor) recently if yes it might be the issue.

If not like the above one try to reset the settings alone

I reset the SMC like instructed on Apple website.

Yes I recall doing an update at some point lately. But I wonder how I can do anything with the software right now to solve it without having the laptop turning on! 🥲

Unfortunately service centers are the best one right now to solve this without loosing data.

@ramialsabki - How about giving us the CoconutBattery info so we can tell if the issue is a simple battery issue or not.

You don't need to o to a service center and in fact as a policy Apple flushes the drive before taking it in! So if you want you data you better backup! Or... Fit it your self if its just a battery issue. But we don't know yet!
