Optical Drive Does not appear in system profiler

The optical drive did not appear in the system profiler.

It was operating - could hear it spin and try to load disc, but disc did not mount.

I have replaced the drive - still have the same problem.

I have replaced the ribbon cable - still have the same problem.

I have been careful with installation and do not believe I messed up anything.

What else can be wrong?

Well, maybe it was the drivers that got corrupted and everything else was working fine - I will never know. After installing the new drive and cable, the hard drive crashed. I tried to repair the drive with First Aid in the target mode, that did not work so I initialized it. After reloading OS 10 and rebooting everything worked fine. I reloaded everything else from my backup. Always have a backup!

Most of the optical drives I've gotten off eBay have been faulty, people either don't know, have no way to test or don't care. The next thing to try would be in an external enclosure. I generally prefer going to an external drive that will move to my next machine as I think these drives are overpriced. Here's what I like to use: http://www.lacie.com/us/products/range.h...

I bought a new drive, not a used one. When I start up in target mode when attached to another Mac the drive shows up with the disc that is in it?

My first thought is that the drivers for the drive are not in the target machine system but are in the other system. Check to see that both machines are running the same or updated systems.
