Peter Pettit, just in case you are on XP you might want to look into this as well. " Causes:
The causes responsible for the above error messages is the digital signing of Windows XP drivers.
Resolution:
The resolution to the above error message restore the iPod using latest version of iTune. If you are unable to fix the problem with this step, perform the following procedures:
regsvr32 /s softpub.dll
regsvr32 /s wintrust.dll
regsvr32 /s dssenh.dll
regsvr32 /s rsaenh.dll
regsvr32 /s gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 /s sccbase.dll
regsvr32 /s slbcsp.dll
regsvr32 /s mssip32.dll
regsvr32 /s cryptdlg.dll
regsvr32 /s initpki.dll
Click on the Copy option from the Edit menu of your web browser

it might be a good idea to explain what you did. i would try to restore it in disk mode....

I am with markus weiher on this. Place the iPod in disk mode and format the iPod. Then restore and resync with itunes.
