What does the noise sound like? Is it coming from the front or rear of the computer? Does the laptop still make the chime sound when it powers on, or is it making this noise instead of the chime sound? Does resetting the PMU and PRAM have any effect?

I agree, it makes sense to back up your files at this point in order to be safe. You might want to go into Disk Utility and do a check on the drive, and see what it says.

Once your files are backed up, I'd boot from the restore media, format the drive, and do a clean install of the OS. That way you're ruling out the software component, and if it still has the same problem, you know you're dealing with a hardware issue.

sounds like a eminent hard drive failure. Back up your user files first. A external drive will do fine. Later you can use the drive for a time machine backup. Then we can look at replacing the SATA hard drive that is overheating and making the fans run to fast. A WD 320 GB Scorpio Black would be my recommendation. get the back up first. putting a new drive in this machine is a snap. we can get to that later
