What was replaced when True Tone works but Face ID does not?

I'm planning to buy an iPhone 11 at a low price. It has True Tone, but Face ID does not work.

  • What does this mean or what was changed on the iPhone?
  • Is it possible to fix it on my own or do I need to send it to Apple? How much does it cost if I fix it on my own and if I send it to Apple?

True Tone is part of the display and the ALS, Face ID is linked to the infra-red flood illuminator, the dot projector and the RGB/IR front cameras.

Apple won't touch your phone if they found out your device has been tampered with, which they will. They charge AASP more than the retail price of the phone when it is new if AASP send in a noncompliant phone to their L2 repair services.

So basically the Face ID can't be fixed anymore?

@mylesuy Yeah why do you think the seller would sell at a low price? If it can be fixed, he'll just fix it for cheap and sell at a much higher price.
