Most likely your Dock Speaker is out. You could replace the entire Dock Assembly (Speaker, Mic, Cable 7and 4). Before opening and during any repair of iPhone 3GS make sure the iPhone is OFF. Keep old Assembly, some have reported antenna issues after this repair.
