new screen won't attach-- metal tabs broken off?

My son removed the screen on iPhone X (to replace battery) and broke the screen. So ordered a new screen, hooked it up, but when I go to reassemble, it doesn’t want to click-in to the phone body. I’m noticing the removed/broken screen has no metal tabs on the edges, but the new screen has several. Could these metal tabs be broken off in the phone body?

More than likely when the screen was removed, the actual display came free from the frame it’s mounted to. Included images for reference of what the inside with no display should look like. The silver bit around the edge of the back of the display is likely still seated in the enclosure. You should be able to pop it out with a tool, just be mindful of the battery and other components. The clips just snap in place and will come free with enough force.
