i had downloaded jing the download folder refuses to open with a ? mark,i downloaded houdini it opens with the help,what should i do to restore the normalcy

Sounds like the folder is damaged. Boot from your system installation disk, go to the second screen pull down menu to Utilities > Disk Utility, select your hard drive in the left hand column and repair the drive then repair permissions.
