Do you need to buy directly from apple for apple care?

I got AirPods from Christmas which were bought from Walmart. Both headphones are quiet but the right was is very low. Apples website doesn’t recognize the purchase date as it wasn’t bought directly from them. I tried blowing, resetting and gently cleaning them but nothing has worked

There are cleaning tools on Amazon specifically for AirPods and you can also find cheap but authentic replacement AirPods on eBay from refurbished reseller.

They should have provided the option to buy Apple care, but idk what’s going on with that.
