Why is the screen not working?

I replaced the lcd screen and it is not working. The first screen I got was defective and the second screen is not working either. How do I confirm it's the screen and not something else.

Is this a good question?

Hi,

With the phone switched on, try shining a torch at an angle close to the screen and check if you can see any images at all.

They will be very faint if they are there so trying this in a darkened room may help.

If there are images then there is a backlight problem. This only narrows down what the problem is and not to where it is. It could be in the display or on the systemboard but at least it’s a start

If there are no images then it is the same as above but you would be looking for a different problem. Why was the original screen replaced?

@jayeff how would I know if it's on? I tried putting it on the charger and shining the light on it and still nothing

How did you prove the the first replacement screen was defective if you don't know if the phone is turning on?

Try turning on the phone and then connect it to a PC via the USB connection and check if the PC recognizes the phone.

Depending on the USB setting in the phone at best you may only charge it this way (indicator light at the top above the screen?) but if the USB setting was set for some other function e.g. media transfer etc the phone will be visible in the File Manager of the PC. This would at least prove that it was working, to a degree anyway and there may just only be a problem with the display.

Hi,

The LDI (liquid damage indicator) being red changes things.

This indicates water has entered and some damage may have occurred.

The impurities in the water causes corrosion and provides circuit paths for the electricity which were not in the phone's operating design and could damage the components. The corrosion starts immediately and is ongoing until it is completely cleaned away

First do not try to charge or to turn on your phone and then remove/disconnect the battery as soon as possible from the phone to minimize any further damage.

Then you need to dis-assemble the rest of the phone and clean all the affected parts using Isopropyl Alcohol 99%+ (available at electronics parts stores) to remove all traces of corrosion and water. If possible do not use "rubbing alcohol" as in some cases this is only 70% IPA or less, can contain additives and is not as effective. If you do have to use it check the label to verify the amount of IPA. The higher the percentage of IPA the better

Here is a link that describes the process. Electronics Water Damage

As always with electronics, especially surface mounted pcb be gentle when handling and especially when brushing away the corrosion. You do not want to remove any components from the board. Remove the shields that may be covering some components as the water may have got in under there. The ends of any flex cables and their connectors need to be cleaned as well

Hopefully after you have done all this the phone might possibly work correctly again.

Here is a link to the Ifixit ZTE Blade Z Max guide(s) that may help with the dis-assembly

Hi @cutieshy3,

Hopefully now you haven't got two problems.

1st is display not working.

2nd is now possible water damage after display replaced.

I can't find any service manual or schematics for the phone online. I'm thinking that you will need them because it's looking like a systemboard board level problem and you would need to initially check the power supply rails on the board to see if they are all OK and are the correct value etc.
