Starts and can access hard drive, but stalls after a few minutes

My iPod 3rd gen has been used as an external hard drive for quite some time now since the battery is essentially dead. Now I'm able to plug it into the computer and access the file system but once I start copying files the iPod locks up after about a minute or two. Is the hard drive dead at this point or is it something else? Can I remove the hard drive and use it in an enclosure? Thanks!

Try to put your iPod in diagnostics mode and see if all the test return properly. To enter Diagnostic Mode: Reset, at Apple logo press and hold the "Previous", "Next", and "Action" keys. Backup your files and try a restore under iTunes and see if it works okay. MAKE SURE YOU BACKUP YOUR FILES, since they will be overwritten. Hope this helps, let us know how you are progressing. Good Luck

This iPod uses a ATA-66 connector, which means it might be possible to find a enclosure, but with the way the drive runs, I say no enclosures and I suggest backing up what you can on the iPod and save a enclosure for a last resort recovery option
