Can I replace my iPhone 7 Home Button on my own or only by Apple?

I recently replaced the screen on my iPhone 7, and I also have to replace the charging port. But after replacing the screen I noticed that the home button stopped working (Touch ID doesn’t work either).

I’ve read online that this could either be a fault of the screen itself (because it connects to the home button) or the home button could be busted.

But I also read that you can’t replace the home button on your own and you need a genuine Apple home button to gain full functionality back, aka Apple can only replace your home button for you. Is this still true? If this still applies, then why does iFixit sell home buttons for the iPhone 7 in their store?

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

Just swapped out my new iFixit Screen for the my old one (glad I still kept it) and the Home Button works totally fine with my old screen. The issue isn’t my Home Button at all; iFixit sent me a defective iPhone 7 Screen.

I would try plugging your old screen back on and test if the home button still works. Have come across a fair amount of aftermarket iPhone 7 screens that have faulty home button connectors.

Good idea, I'll try that first before I try to buy a new home button.

No, only Apple can fully repair it for you and they won’t touch the device if you messed with it.

What if I don't care if Touch ID works or not? If I replace my home button with the one from iFixit, will it act like any normal home button, minus the Touch ID functionality?

by

It will do nothing. There is a third party home button that has click functionality only.

Would the iFixit replacement home button not restore functionality to the button with the exclusion of TouchID? I thought the replacement part provided by iFixit was capable of at least acting like a regular button minus TouchID, or else what would be the point in the part if it does nothing?

I don't know what iFixit sells these days, but OEM parts definitely will not work, only modified aftermarket parts are able to restore button press.
