Is it possible to use a 6th gen screen on a 5th gen iPod? If not are there any other basic upgrades I can do to improve the overall performance?

No - the screens look similar, but are different enough if you do it, the colors are off.

No, it won’t work properly.

Some upgrades that you can do are:

  1. Replace the battery.
  2. Replace the hard drive with an SD card (you can get an SD card adapter for your iPod at https://www.iflash.xyz).
