Why won’t my headset work I’ve tried everything and it’s brand new

I bought my daughter the Xbox one s for Christmas and some headphones that are compatible to Xbox one but they won’t work we have tried everything. The headset works on my husband and little boys PlayStation consoles so it’s not the headset we’ve connected the controller to her Xbox the connection is inserted properly and it’s brand new please help as she wants to speak to her friends on the games
