hello i was hoping to find some help here because my volume buttons wont work and i thought the flex cable might be damged but the mute button works and ive tried restarting but nothing helps

Just because your mute switch works doesn’t necessarily mean the flex cable is bad or damaged. Was it ever repaired before? You can order a replacement assembly from ifixit iPhone 8 Audio Control Cable and Brackets
I would like to inform you to make sure you keep the parts organized down to every screw. This repair will require a complete teardown of your phone. You may want to have a replacement battery on hand. Even as a shop owner and tech myself I have a hard time removing the battery in the 8 series without bending it and I don’t feel confident in reusing it if I damage it.
