2GB RAM installed - how to get to 3 or 4 GB

Machine description: MacBook Pro 15, A1211 with Intel Core 2 Duo 2.16 Ghz. Currently has 2GB installed, goal is to get to 3 or 4 GB, can i re-use one of the two 1GB Ram chips ? Or do I have to buy two new chips ?

Options

You could install it but Mactracker says only 3 GB would be addressed so I wouldn't do it.
