Why is my hard drive not showing up?

I recently replace the optical drive in my 1.5GHz Mac Mini with one that I bought from ifixit.com. After re-assembling and powering up, the hard drive was not seen. Thinking the drive died I went out and bought a new one and installed it. Still no drive showing up. I am thinking that maybe the interconnect board went bad? The optical drive works fine, only any hard drives hooked up are not seen. How can I tell if it's the interconnect board or something worse?

I ended up taking out the interconnect board and noticed some of the pins on the SATA connector were crooked so I played with them a bit and got it working again. I installed snow leopard on the newer bigger drive and used migration assistant with the old drive in a USB enclosure to migrate in all the data. It seems the SATA connector on the 2006 interconnect board is very poor. Is their any newer revision that is better made and compatible?

Its very easy to miss the proper alignment of the hard drive connectors to the interconnect board or the interconnect board to the logic board. I would open your computer up again and double check those connections. Since you are seeing the optical drive I would pay special attention to the hard drive itself.
