My old MacBook w/o HDD.

I haven’t used a Mac, always used a PC.

I got an old MacBook A1181 without a HDD, so I bought a HDD with OS-X (Yosemite) preinstalled.

I put it in and pressed power, but it didn’t boot and stayed in the grey screen w/ some error signal. The seller says the HDD is for MacBook Pro and it is the reason why it wouldn’t work.

How could I make this work at all?

I happen to find some sites for ‘downloading old Mac OS.’ Are these the sites that I have to use?

Sorry about this strange question.

Thanks, John

First your system is trying to tell you something! “… grey screen w/ some error signal

Lets identify the error signal I’m assuming its a beep code, review this and tell us which one you are getting About Mac startup tones if you are getting a symbol review this If your Mac doesn't start up all the way

As far as your OS issue on your drive: There are a few different systems in the A1181 series! You’ll need to figure out which one, so we know which OS is the correct one for it.

The easiest way is to plug in the systems S/N here EveryMac - Lookup. Once you know which model we can aim you to what you’ll need. For now hold off getting anything from the web as some are very questionable!

OS X Yosemite won’t work unless you have a 2009 or later A1181. Reinstalling the OS isn’t hard, though.

It shouldn’t hurt to check the model using the serial number (take out the battery first, it’s in that area)

Could you also specify the “grey screen with error sounds”?
