Any tips about home repair of iPhone 3GS?

My Apple iPhone 3GS 16gb "died" on me after I plugged it in to charge. After much rebooting, examination and wailing, I finally gave in and went to my local Apple store. After confirming I had not got it wet, they told me the problem was slight separation between the silver/chrome surround and the back cover near to the docking port. This is fatal by all accounts. I was offered a new replacement for a reasonable price but at the time I couldn't afford it. Any suggestions for self repair?

Case separation isn't fatal...internal damage is whats fatal...and also typically repairable!

Can you be more specific about your problem(s)? Did you plug it in to charge and then it died when you unplugged it? Will it run plugged in? Will it start at all?

Phillip is correct that you must be certain as to what is really wrong with your iPhone. If it really is just separation of the bezel from the back case, then the fix is Super Glue. A very little bit goes a long way. If you get any on the outside of the case it will leave a blemish. More importantly however is any that drips inside can damage internal components (a very little goes a long way). So glue away from buttons and important components. I like to use the Super Glue Gel, it does not run from the spot you put it. Glue, press case/bezel together for 30 seconds or so, done.

I'd agree with philip and brad. If the bezel has come apart you need to investigate a little further. I wouldn't give up just yet It may be that the motherboard has lifted from the battery or that connector 4 from the dock isn't connected so you have no power or no charge. Use any of the links under the photo for how to open your phone..
